Hamilton town centre has been dealt another blow with news that Marks and Spencer is to close.
Staff at the store, situated within the Regent Shopping Centre, have been notified today that the shop is to shut as part of a reshaping of the business.
Bosses have, however, said they will be opening a new M&S Foodhall within the former Watt Brothers building at Douglas Park Lane, Hamilton.

It is understood many members of staff will transfer to the new store and there will be opportunities for others to move to stores in Glasgow’s Argyle Street, Braehead and Silverburn.
In a statement Marks and Spencer said: “The way people shop is changing so we are reshaping our store estate across M&S to fit the needs of our customers.
“In Hamilton we plan to open a brand new M&S Foodhall in the former Watt Brothers sire at 6 Douglas Park Lane. It’s going to be one of our renewal stores with a fresh marketplace feel and new products and services including a larger bakery and a fill-your-own feature where customers can bring their own containers to save on packaging.
“Our investment in this new store does unfortunately mean that we propose to close our exisinting store on Regents Way.
“In the case of Hamilton, we have given our offer in the local area a great deal of consideration and have decided we can best serve our customers by making these changes.”
Marks and Spencer say their priority is to “support our colleagues” through the changes, working hard to redeploy as many colleagues as possible.
The new M&S Hamilton Foodhall is expected to open in the spring of next year.
Monica Lennon MSP today said she the news was “terrible”.
In a social media post she said: “Terrible news that Marks and Spencer is closing its Regent Way store in Hamilton Town Centre.
“Plans to open a new food hall at the former Watt Brothers will not mitigate this loss. Solidarity with the workers and loyal customers who have supported this anchor store for decades.
