Angelina Jolie has beaten Jennifer Aniston’s previous record for quickest climb to 1m followers

Angelina Jolie has joined Instagram, but don’t expect pictures of her meals or selfies – she’s using it on behalf of oppressed people across the world.

But despite the lack of glam content promised, she still clocked up a whopping 2.1 million new followers in just three hours.

It means that she beat Jennifer Aniston’s previous record for the quickest growth to 1 million followers after her October 2019 debut on the ‘Gram – it took the 52-year-old five hours and 16 minutes.

Jen’s first post was a photo of her with Friends co-stars David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox, which she captioned: “And now we’re Instagram FRIENDS too, HI INSTAGRAM.”

Angelina opted not to go down memory lane with her first Insta, and the 46-year-old actress, who in her bio describes herself as “Mom, filmmaker, Special Envoy for UN refugees”, instead chose to share a photograph of a heartbreaking letter from a terrified teenage girl in Afghanistan now facing Taliban rule, and a photo of women wearing burkhas.

And, showing she is already a dab hand at the platform, she also shared an Insta story, linking to an article she has written for Time Magazine about the Afghanistan crisis.

At the time of writing, Ange has 4.4m followers, and a lot of them flooded the post to praise her for “using her platform for good.”

One fan commented: “I am an Iraqi girl and I love you very much because you are an example of humanity and compassion in addition to a more than wonderful actress.”

Another said: “So proud of you! Thank u so much for using your voice.”

Despite both Jennifer and Angelina being hugely successful women with different career paths and passions, they do have one thing in common – both were married to Brad Pitt – and both were loving him at the same time .

Aniston was married to the 57-year-old from 2000 to 2005, the year that he became romantically involved with Angelina.

Later in 2006, a year after his divorcefrom Jen, Angelina said they had fallen for each other on the set of their film Mr & Mrs Smith.

She told Vogue: “Because of the film, we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things, and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened.”

Their marriage broke down after Brad met second wife Angelina on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith in 2014 – and their chemistry in the film hints at the fireworks that were sparked off set.

Ange added: “I think a few months in I realised, ‘God, I can’t wait to get to work.’ … Anything we had to do with each other, we just found a lot of joy in it together and a lot of real teamwork. We just became kind of a pair.

“It took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realise that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe. And both knowing that the reality of that was a big thing, something that was going to take a lot of serious consideration.”

‘Brangelina’ wed in 2014 but split two years later, and despite being divorced as of 2019 the warring exes are still locked in a bitter and very expensive custody battle over their five youngest children.

There are six Jolie-Pitt children; twins Vivienne and Knox, 12, and Shiloh, 15, plus with Maddox, 20, Zahara, 16, and Pax, 17, who were adopted from orphanages in Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam.
