Aston Villa told to be ‘looking’ at Allan Saint-Maximin transfer

Aston Villa have been advised to look at signing Newcastle United wing wizard Allan Saint-Maximin.

Villa are expected to strengthen their squad once again this summer with the Express & Star reporting that a winger and a forward will be targeted in the transfer market, while a ‘number ten’ and a defender are also under consideration.

Bertrand Traore was signed last year to add to Villa head coach Dean Smith’s options on the wing with Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet competing for the opposite flank to captain Jack Grealish.

Villa were challenging for the top four until a run of one win in seven games, that coincided with an injury to Grealish, knocked them out of contention and down towards mid-table.

Still, it is a good season for Villa who are progressing nicely after promotion back to the top-flight almost two years ago.

And former midfielder Lee Hendrie reckons on Dean Smith’s list of transfer targets should include Saint-Maximin, who has proved to be one of the Premier League’s most exciting talents.

Saint-Maximin has struggled with injury this season and his absence has seen Newcastle battling relegation. The player, who cost £20 million when he signed from Nice in 2019, could be up for sale if Steve Bruce’s side do return to the Championship.

“He is one that I would certainly take,” Hendrie told website the Transfer Tavern. “He’s got that Premier League credibility. We’ve seen what he can do.”

“He’s got that attack rate, he’s got flair you know, all sorts. He could be a key addition to a Villa side that I feel – that’s where they’ve really lacked, in wide areas.

“I touched on Trezeguet before, I think he’d certainly come into the side. He reminds me of certain elements of Traore, but he’s possibly got that little bit more element of pace going forward and he’s very direct, so he’d be someone I’d certainly be looking at.”
