Aston Villa tipped to complete transfer for Ivan Toney

Aston Villa have been told to look into making a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney in the summer.

Toney was signed by Brentford in the summer as a replacement for Ollie Watkins, who Villa purchased from Thomas Frank’s side for a club record fee of £28 million in September.

Watkins scored 25 goals in 46 matches last season but Toney has already bettered that record this campaign by three goals with eight matches to go.

Toney bagged 24 goals in League One for Peterborough United last season before 2019-20 in the third tier was brought to a premature end because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The former Newcastle United player has performed once again despite stepping up a level and if he shows the same adaptability as Watkins then the price that Brentford could demand, if they do not get promoted to the Premier League, would be well worth it.

The Bees are in third place with seven games remaining, eight points behind Watford in second with a game-in-hand on Xisco Munoz’s side.

Villa could move for a striker in the summer to complement Watkins, with Wesley Moraes still yet to return to first-team action after suffering a serious knee injury in January last year.

Keinan Davis, meanwhile, registered his first assist in the Premier League on Sunday.

“There’s no way if Brentford don’t go up this season that he’s not getting snapped up by someone because he’s been the best player in the Championship arguably, because of the goals he has scored, and the assists he has been involved in,” Hendrie told Football League World.

“I’d certainly have a look at if I was Villa manager.

“If I had to pick a player, Toney I’d certainly be looking at if Brentford didn’t go up because of his goals this season.

“I feel that he would fit into a well certainly a Villa side if he was available, it’s just obviously what fee they’d have to pay for him.”
