39 parts of West Midlands with Covid rates over 100

Almost 40 ‘blue’ areas of the West Midlands appear as Covid hotspots on the Government’s latest virus mapping data.

Topping the chart are the villages of Honeybourne and Littleton, near Evesham, in Worcestershire, with an infection rate of 265.6 per 100,000 of the population. It had 16 new cases recorded in the seven days to April 2.

It follows a Covid outbreak at HM Prison Long Lartin, a maximum security men’s jail is situated within Littleton, at the end of March and beginning of April.

A “number of cases” were reported, but the exact number was not disclosed by the Prison Service.

Elsewhere in the region, Polesworth, Warton & Austrey, in Warwickshire, recorded a rate of 199.8, Greets Green East, in West Bromwich, has 177.6, and Sparkbrook North, in Birmingham, has 144. Smith’s Wood North, in Solihull, also has 153.5.

Despite the latest figures Covid was significantly higher a month ago when 37 West Midlands postcodes had infection rates of over 200.

Lockdown restrictions continue to be eased with non-essential shops, hair salons and pub beer gardens all reopening on Monday, April 12.

More than two million people have now received their first dose of the live-saving Covid jab in the West Midlands since the largest vaccination programme began.
