Barclays names new capital markets leaders in latest shake-up

Barclays promoted a swathe of senior capital markets bankers as the UK lender continues to reshape the top of its investment bank.

Tom Johnson and Peter Mason, who have been leading its equity and debt capital markets business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, respectively, have been promoted to co-heads of capital markets in the region, according to people familiar with the matter.

As a result of Johnson’s promotion, Manuel Esteve, the former JPMorgan banker who joined Barclays last year, has been named head of ECM for Emea, they added. He had previously headed up the unit for continental Europe.

Esteve spent over 18 years at JPMorgan until he moved to Barclays in August last year. Johnson has been with the UK lender for nearly 12 years, having joined from UBS in 2009, while Mason has led Barclays DCM business in Emea since 2019.

Lee Cumbes has been named as head of DCM for Emea and retains his role as head of public sector, while Mark Geller has been appointed global head of banks DCM, the people added.

Meanwhile, Tom Swerling, a managing director within its ECM team, has been named global head of equity linked financing solutions, which offers complex and often bespoke equity products for clients.

In the US, Barbara Mariniello has been promoted to head of DCM and RSG Americas. The bank has also spun out its securitised products origination division as a separate business line, run by Marty Attea, global head of the new unit.

The promotions within Barclays’ capital markets unit follow a frantic week of changes at the UK lender, which has installed a new co-heads of investment banking in Jean-Francois ‘JF’ Astier and John Miller and created a new 11-strong management team in the unit.
