‘That’s the challenge’ – Millwall boss on away form ahead of Swansea and Norwich City road tests

Gary Rowett believes Millwall must show the same consistency levels away from home if they want to recreate their SE16 success on the road.

The Lions have won eight of their last 10 matches at The Den but are winless in their previous seven away games, losing four of them – including their opening away fixture of this campaign at Sheffield United.

Tomorrow Millwall head to Swansea City before a Friday night assignment at Norwich City.

“I think we’ve got to maintain the home form,” said Rowett. “The form has been sensational. Away from home, we have to show that same consistency, and that’s the challenge. Most teams find it a bit easier to play at home. Of course, they do. Most teams find it a bit difficult to create good away form, but we’ve got the squad to do that this year. We’ve got that resilience. We’ve got that mentality to go away from home and run and chase out those performances. Now we have to go and show it, don’t we?

“We’ve got two tough ones coming up. I don’t think the team can be judged until 10 away games. Swansea away and Norwich away are both challenging games, let alone on a Tuesday night and a Friday night, but we will certainly go to those games with a thin squad but with a little more confidence after the final 70 minutes of today’s game.”

Millwall will go into those two games light on the ground, especially in the forward areas after Bennett’s injury, but new signing Andreas Voglsammer should be cleared in time for the trip to South Wales, but Zian Flemming and Tom Bradshaw both look set to miss out.

Rowett added: “We hope that Vogey [Voglsammer] will be available. Mason, I don’t think he will be available for a while. It looked like a serious hamstring injury, Tom Bradshaw is making slightly quicker progress than Zian [Flemming], but I don’t think either of them will be too far away for the week after. I think this week will be a bit too quick. This is the type of week in the Championship where you need your squad and options. We are slightly limited in terms of some of those options.”
