Historic Northumberland mansion sells for £5m

An historic country estate in Northumberland has been sold for £5m after coming on the market for the first time in 145 years.

The Blenkinsopp Hall and Estate includes a 14,000sq ft, 10-bedroom Grade II listed mansion along with another nine houses and cottages and more than 500 acres of land.

The estate, located near Haltwhistle, also has a listed stable block, a walled garden and comes with sporting rights and a farm.

After coming to the market for the first time in almost 150 years, the Blenkinsopp Estate attracted worldwide interest and appeared in magazines and publications such as Forbes and Country Life.

The property was bought by Julian and Hayley Silverwood for £5m this month.

In the short term, Mr and Mrs Silverwood intend to manage the estate traditionally with rental income obtained for the properties and agricultural land.

The woodlands, which form part of the estate, will be used sustainably to produce duel for two biomass boilers and the owners are planning to increase the number of trees planted. On top of this, the land will be used for carbon capture and carbon sequestration to help their clients offset their emissions.

Blenkinsopp Hall was built by Colonel John Blenkinsop Coulson in around 1800 with improvements made in 1835 by famed Tyneside architect John Dobson and other alterations in 1877. It has a walled garden and its own lake, as well as an impressive clock tower.

The estate, which has tributaries of the River South Tyne passing across it, had been owned by the Joicey family since 1875.

During the sale, Mr and Mrs Silverwood were advised by Stephen Greenwood, from Farleys Solicitors, who was assisted by Graeme Booth, Olivia Hepworth and Sally Eastwood. Keystone Law’s Hugh Murphy acted for the sellers.

Mr and Mrs Silverwood said: “The purchase of Blenkinsopp Estate was always going to be a significant undertaking and this would not have been possible without the professional assistance from all team above.

“It is therefore a little unfair to single anyone out but without doubt Stephen Greenwood from Farleys provided an exceptional service and ultimately allowed us to reach completion – we cannot thank him enough for his efforts. We are now looking forward to enjoying the Estate with our young family.”
