Celebrity facialist Barbara Sturm opens her first London spa

s London’s salons and spas open their doors once again, facials are sure to be high on the list of most-requested treatments, as we all seek out some professional assistance to undo the effects of the wine and Zoom marathons.

For anyone looking to give their skin some serious post-lockdown loving, skincare supremo Barbara Sturm’s first ever London outpost is the hot new place to get pampered and zhuzhed.

Designed by her architect brother Tobias Fretag, who also designed her venues in LA and Dusseldorf, the spa is spread over two floors and features lots of white marble, sleek white seating and minimal architectural elements.

Two express treatment rooms will offer shorter treatments to lunchbreak and time-pressed customers, while four, fully fitted treatment rooms will deliver Sturm’s signature glow, brightening, darker skin tones and clarifying facials, a men’s facial and high-tech anti-ageing treatments like Myolift microcurrent. Mayfair will also be the first of Sturm’s spas to offer body treatments, details of which are coming soon.

A beautiful ‘discovery table’ made from Italian green onyx is the ground floor focal point where customers can learn about and shop the super popular Molecular Cosmetics skincare line Sturm founded back in 2014. While those looking for something more heavy duty will be delighted to her that Dr. Sturm’s new medically advanced Professional Line will be on offer, but only following an in-person consultation.

What made you choose London for your third outpost?

It is the most natural next location for me; I have such a large clientele in London and it is like a second home to me. My London patients are among the most discerning in the world when it comes to their skincare knowledge, forever searching for the latest innovations and ingredients to benefit their skin. I am thrilled to be officially bringing the #SturmGlow to Mayfair.

Which treatments are most popular in your LA and Dusseldorf salons?

Post-quarantine we observed a huge demand for treatments at our LA and Düsseldorf Boutique & Spas such as the Super Anti-Aging Facial, the Clarifying Facial and the Darker Skin Tones Facial due to people experiencing severe breakouts caused by mask congestion or ‘maskne’ and the digital pollution that’s affected our skin due to our increased time spent in front of devices. In LA,we also added new post-lockdown treatments including anti-inflammatory massages and body and wellness treatments, which have been hugely popular. And Micro-needling and Microdermabrasion have been almost automatically requested to treat ‘maskne’ issues in our Düsseldorf clinic and our other spa locations.

What will the London salon have that people can’t find anywhere else?

The Boutique& Spa will offer all of my most-loved treatments as well as new aesthetic practices, exclusive to the London flagship. These include the sought-after Instant Glow Facial and the new extended Signature Sturm Glow Facial; an elevated, super anti-ageing treatment that features unique massage techniques to lift, tone and firm the facial contours. The Mayfair Boutique & Spa will also be the first of my spas to offer body treatments – including an exclusive Anti-Ageing Body Treatment that has been designed to smooth, firm and rejuvenate the skin on the body for a more youthful appearance. More details of my other body treatments will be announced soon.

Will you personally be there sometimes to offer treatments?

No, I do not personally give facials – that is left to my amazing aestheticians! You will find me in my Dusseldorf Boutique & Spa, which is where I see clients for aesthetic treatments and where my head office is based, though I do plan to come to London as often as I’m able.

What do you think most people are looking for when it comes to re-invigorating skin post lockdown?

People who have been getting regular treatments such as non-surgical injectables are looking to touch up after a year of not being able to. My younger patients or those who haven’t started with injectables just want to reinvigorate their skin with treatments like the Instant Glow Facial, my signature #SturmGlow facial – it incorporates techniques created in my German clinic for cleansing, exfoliating, potent hydration and firming massage and includes ten essential products which when combined, give you the coveted Sturm Glow. It leaves you with an instant radiance and has long lasting reparative effects on the skin barrier function as well as intensive hydration.

For now you are just offering facials, might aesthetic treatments follow?

For the moment, we are offering facials and body treatments and have no plans to offer aesthetic treatments though that might change sometime down the line.

What are your favourite places to visit when you’re in London?

I love to visit museums and art galleries such as the Tate Modern and the Natural History Museum, and I love walking and browsing the stores on Mount Street – which is why I chose that location for the London Boutique & Spa. I also love to have dinner with friends at Kai Mayfair.

What are you most excited to do post-lockdown?

Though it’s been difficult, the pandemic presented the perfect opportunity for me to speak to so many of my patients and customers but it’s also reminded me that life really comes down to our human connections and how important spending time with your family is. I’m really excited to get back to that.

Facial treatments at Barbara Sturm Mayfair start at £150, book online here.
