Mega warehouses pop up in the UK to cater for the online shopping boom

Mega warehouses are being built to cater for the UK online shopping boom

Mega warehouses are being built to cater for the UK online shopping boom. Last year 49 ‘super-sheds’ with an area equivalent to 191 football pitches, or 14.7m square feet, were built, Altus Group said.

The property adviser said this was close to the shop space lost when 600 Debenhams and Arcadia stores shut following their collapse. The pandemic accelerated the shift to internet shopping, with purchases online up from a fifth to close to 28pc in July, forcing companies to fight for warehouse space.

The warehouses, all bigger than 85,000 square feet, are mainly in the ‘Golden Triangle’ area of the East Midlands, which has cheaper rents and motorway links.
